Description
Who chooses the news and how? Is the multi-media boom expanding or narrowing our perspective? Just what is “fair and balanced news” and how do news outlets achieve it? And, how do groups and political campaigns work with the media to get their message out?
In this session we posed these questions to Rhode Island’s key news reporters, editors and station managers. Class members toured a variety of media outlets, and had the opportunity to play the role of news reporters and editors in a group simulation. They also heard the inside scoop on political campaigns’ efforts to gain media coverage. Participants may never read the newspaper, or watch or listen to the news in quite the same way again!
Objective
To expand awareness with regards to the various media outlets available for information in RI and gain insight into the decisions made by those various outlets with regards to the knowledge they impart. The class will look at the role of ethics in journalism and the impact it can have on the messages conveyed. Additionally, participants will explore their leadership styles by engaging in a critical decision making activity.
